Wind season: the best time to visit São Miguel do Gostoso

There is no bad time to visit São Miguel do Gostoso, only the right time for your kind of trip. The village has two very different moments in the year: the wind season, when kites fill the sky over Ponta do Santo Cristo, and the calm season, when the beaches are almost private and prices drop. This guide explains what to expect from each.

August to January: the wind season

This is Gostoso at its peak. The trade winds arrive firm and steady, averaging 20 to 30 knots, and make the village one of the best kitesurfing and wingfoil destinations in the world. September, October and November are the most reliable months: wind almost every day, open sky and turquoise sea.

It is also when the village is at its busiest: full restaurants, kite schools running at full speed, people from all over the world on the sand streets. If your idea of a beach trip is some action (by Gostoso's standards, since it never stops being a village), this is your time. The trade-off: pousadas are harder to book and prices are high season, especially from November to January. Book ahead.

February to July: the calm season

With the arrival of autumn, the wind drops and the village slows down. This is the time for anyone who wants real rest: long, almost empty beaches, calmer water for swimming and stand-up paddle, a quiet sunset at Maceió and noticeably cheaper rates.

Between March and July there can be short rain showers, usually bursts that pass within an hour and leave everything green. June and July have mild weather and are great for people traveling with children or who want to work from home with a sea view without high-season prices.

And for those who want to learn kitesurfing?

The start of the wind season, August and September, is ideal: consistent wind to progress fast, but schools and beaches are not yet as crowded as in December. The shallow, flat water at Ponta do Santo Cristo is considered one of the best kite classrooms on the planet.

Summary by type of traveler

Kitesurfer or windsurfer: September to December, no question. Looking for quiet and savings: April to July. Families with children: June and July (mild weather) or February (calm sea, after New Year's). New Year's and parties: December and January, but book months ahead.

Whatever the season, the sunset at Praia do Maceió, the artisanal farinhada (cassava flour making) and the village's welcoming way are there all year. Explore the Vive Gostoso guides to plan your trip: where to eat, where to stay and what to do in every corner of São Miguel do Gostoso.
